Stressed and in-debt tenants at risk of eviction in West Australia will be eligible for up to $5000 as the state government rolls out a multi-million dollar rent relief scheme.

Premier Roger Cook says the $24.4 million program that starts in December will help financially vulnerable tenants “doing it tough” stay in their private rental homes and “get back on their feet”.

“The WA Rent Relief Program will help to keep a roof over the heads of families that have hit hard times,” he said on Wednesday.

“Our strong financial management means we have the capacity to invest in new programs that support those who need it most.”

Community service organisations like Anglicare WA and Vinnies WA will identify tenants in need through their existing services and networks.

They’ll also help them apply for the relief, which could include arrears payment and up to 50 per cent of future rent costs for up to three months, capped at $5000.

Tenants will be required to demonstrate they meet the eligibility criteria, which include experiencing rental stress, being in rental arrears, and being at risk of eviction.

Community service organisations will also help tenants secure continuation of their tenancy agreements, with the rent relief paid directly to the landlord or via a property manager.
