Insights on Australia’s changing workforce

KEY INSIGHTS FROM THE DELOITTE ACCESS ECONOMICS REPORT INTO THE FUTURE OF THE WORKFORCE:

* When new technologies are introduced, they generally create as many jobs as they destroy. But the jobs created are generally more hidden than those lost.

* Knowledge worker jobs will make up 86 per cent of the jobs created between now and 2030.

* Two thirds of jobs created will be “soft-skill intensive”, meaning they will require traits such as a clear communication, empathy and working well with others.

* By 2030, one quarter of Australia’s workforce will be professionals, mostly in business services, health, education or engineering.

* Australians are staying in their jobs longer than ever, with 45 per cent of workers with their current employer for more than five years.

* More Australians are working flexibly but only one in every 25 people worked remotely on the last Census day.

* The typical Australian worker today is missing about two of the 18 critical skills that are advertised for a job, compared to 1.2 at the start of the decade.

* Looking specifically at nine skills required for “work of the heart”, such as creativity and caring, Deloitte found shortages in eight of them.

* Of 23 skills required for “work of the head”, 70 per cent were in shortage, while none of the three skills needed for “work of the hands” were in shortage.

* Deloitte estimates Australia could add $36 billion to its national income each year if it shapes the workforce well, to achieve a balance between skills needed and skills held.
