It’s been raining for days, you’ve made your preparations and the water level is rising. If your immediate area is likely to be flooded you should:

• Listen to the radio or television for weather advice and warnings.
• Be aware that flash flooding can occur. If there is any possibility of a flash flood, move to higher ground as quickly as you can. Do not wait for instructions to move.
• Have waterproof bags ready to protect clothing and important documents.

If you have to leave your home, you should:

• Make sure your home is secure.
• Turn off power and gas sources at the main switch. Disconnect your electrical appliances and don’t plug them in or turn them on until it is safe to do so.
• Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
• Do not enter flood waters or allow children to play in or near them.
• Do not drive into flooded areas. If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground if you can do so safely. You and the vehicle can be swept away quickly.
• Do not camp or park your car along streams, rivers or creeks, particularly during threatening conditions.

If you choose to stay or when you return:

• Make sure it is safe to enter your property.
• Do not turn any lights or appliances until an electrician has checked your house.
• Do not eat food that has been in flood waters.
• Boil tap water until supplies have been declared safe.
• Check for unwanted visitors, such as spiders, snakes, rats or mice who may have crept into your home to keep dry.
